Equity Initiative 2020

In light of recent events, the Writer's Ink team hopes to use our platform to bridge gaps in educational resources and promote equity in all of our work. In our efforts to expand our reach to underserved communities, we are holding a writing competition for high school students who qualify for free/reduced lunch.

 

Calling high school students who qualify for free/reduced lunch and/or have been economically impacted by COVID-19! The first WINK Equity Initiative Writing Contest is now accepting submissions. Prizes offered currently include a college counseling package and $100. We look forward to reading your stories!

The challenge is open for entries until August 18 at 11:59 PM PST. Please read the contest rules below for more information. If you have any questions, contact us at contact@writersinknonprofit.org.

Choose one of the following prompts:

1. Your house is on fire, and after getting your family and pets out safely, you can only make one more run back in. What do you grab? (1500 words maximum)

2. Write a story mainly using dialogue. (1500 words maximum)

Deadline: Saturday, August 18 at 11:59 p.m. PST

  • 1500 words max.

​

  • 2020 scholarship winners are not eligible to apply.

​

  • Participants are limited to one entry.

​

  • Selected winners must provide proof of income status or impact to accept the prize.

 

  • Participants must be currently in high school in the U.S.

 

  • The submitted entry should be entirely composed by one student and typed.

​

  • Each student may only submit one entry. No collaborative entries will be accepted; this includes other students and parents. Parents and students will need to sign the entry form and include it in the submission.

 

  • Entries must be submitted through the Google Form above.

Tips!

  • Focus on using descriptive language. Add details about the characters, setting (where it takes place), and the environment. Show and don’t tell!​

  • Use your imagination! Tell us stories that make us happy, sad, fearful, excited, etc. Take us along an adventure. Write stories that you would want to read.

  • Don’t try to retell a story you’ve read. For example, don’t just rewrite Harry Potter in your own words. Be original and creative.
